Sustainable development needs observation of environmental requirements, human and urban societies, while at the same time sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend.
Sustainable development draws on economics and other social sciences as well as hard sciences. Sustainability in general is a broad discipline, giving students and graduates insights into most facets of the human world from business to technology, environment and social sciences. Sustainability skills and environmental awareness is becoming a superiority in future corporate jobs at graduate level.
Therefore, it is highly significant to educate graduates and raise their awareness about sustainable development and modern challenges facing the current metropolitan contexts in urban development, energy and water engineering. The fundamental skills with which graduates leave college or university are highly sought after. Accordingly, the program is preparing graduates for the labor market through academic courses, lectures and field visits to solar and water plants as graduates will be acquainted to many fields - most commonly civic planning, environmental consultancy (built and natural environment), agriculture, energy, water engineering and sustainable urban development.
The purpose of the program is to provide engineering graduates with a range of additional skills based on solving complex problems in a sustainable manner by integrating renewable energies and the impact of climate change on cities, informal settlements and shedding light on the relationship between society and the environment.
Transportation is an essential part of our daily lives. It enables access to work, business, education, health services, and social interaction. In addition, the transport sector represents a major driving force behind the growing global demand for energy.
Global attention to sustainable transport and mobility has continued in recent years as a major component of sustainable development to enhance economic growth while respecting the environment as well as improving social equity, health, resilience of cities, urban-rural linkages and productivity of rural areas.
In the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, sustainable transport is mainstreamed across several SDGs. The importance of transport for climate action is further recognized under the UNFCCC. In addition, the transport sector plays in particular an important role in the achievement of the Paris Agreement, given the fact that close to a quarter of energy-related global greenhouse gas emissions come from transport and that these emissions are projected to grow substantially in the years to come. In Egypt, an estimate by the Egyptian Ministry for Environment, found that vehicle emissions also contribute to almost a quarter of total environmental pollution. Consequently, as the emerging electric vehicle industry continues to rise, the time for a paradigm shift in mobility has come.
Accordingly, the project focuses on exchange of experience with leading national experts and international players in the field of sustainable transport in general and electric mobility in particular. In addition, the project aims for promoting electric vehicles in Egypt for public and private transport, as an attempt to reduce the consumption of petroleum products and reduce the effect of emissions from petrol powered vehicles on the environment.
Our planet is currently experiencing negative impacts due to climate change. Studies have indicated that Egypt, due to its geographical conditions, will suffer from the negative impact of climate change, especially the Delta region, which is one of the most important food production areas in Egypt.
In addition, expected global warming, water shortages and the increase of agricultural pests can negatively affect plant production, which burdens farmers and the state with significant losses in the absence of measures to deal with these conditions and changes. Consequently, here lies the importance of the early warning system against weather fluctuations. For the same reason, the integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) approach is one of the global instruments that have been recognized for more than 15 years in many coastal regions around the world and has proven to be sustainable in sustaining the resources of these areas and protecting them from the negative impact of climate change.
This approach is based on participatory and integrative work, a process characterized by dynamism and based on a true scientific basis. In addition, one of the most advanced strategies established by developed countries to alleviate the negative effects of climate change is the stimulus policy, as well as the use of eco-friendly electric vehicles instead of gasoline and conventional fuels. Statistics by the Ministry of Environment indicate that vehicle emissions contribute about a quarter of total environmental pollution, which in fact has economic, social and environmental impact.
In that context, the project aims to engage and compliment government efforts to increase the capacity of the technical staff in the Ministry of Environment and concerned departments by preparing and conducting plans for integrated coastal zone management and enhance their ability to identify threats from climate change through Geographic Information Systems. In addition to the introduction to more sustainable means of transport and the efficient use of abundant sources of renewable energy that can reduce CO emissions and decrease air pollutions.
